Martin E. Marty, the Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, will deliver the 2004-05 Ralph Gregory Elliot Lecture, titled “The First Amendment–Religion: Subordinated, Not Subservient,” on Monday, January 31, 2005, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 127. The talk is free and open to the public.
Martin Marty has taught at the University of Chicago, mostly in the Divinity School, since 1963. Specializing in the history of modern American religion, Marty has written over fifty books, including Righteous Empire, which won the National Book Award. Among his other books are the three-volume Modern American Religion and a biography of Martin Luther. Marty has also been a columnist for the Christian Century since 1956 and the editor of a semimonthly newsletter, Context.
Marty is an ordained minister and served for a decade as a Lutheran parish pastor before joining the University of Chicago faculty. His other honors include the National Humanities Medal, the Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the University of Chicago Alumni Medal.
